Westpoint Shopping Centre, Blacktown

QIC awarded this project to Laing O’Rourke through APP Project Managers, which was fully documented. The design for demolition was procured by KBR structural engineers, which was provided to Mann Group to price the demolition. Upon reviewing the 2 x 2inch thick design briefs Mann Group contacted Laing O’Rourke and requested if an alternative demolition methodology can be utilised on this project.

Mr David Newburg responded with provide the alternative demolition methodology with all supporting documentation i.e. program, sequence, staging, engineers advice, reasons why the proposed design should be considered over the KBR design and if any cost savings. Once Mann Group provided the alternative design with all supporting documentation, Mr Newburg reviewed the documents passed them on to KBR engineers for approval. KBR engineers approved Mann Group alternative design for demolition which far surpassed the KBR design in every way.

Comparisons between both designs are as follows:

Mr David Newburg awarded the project to Mann Group. Mann Group carried out the project perfectly in an operating shopping centre during day shift saving on the overtime rates for demolition of the beams at night, which in turn reduced Mann Group tender offer by some $700K. The project was completed successfully without any delays or accident. QIC, APP, Laing O’Rourke and centre management met onsite to commend Mann Group on the safe and successful delivery of the demolition, ahead of program.
